When you come back from a trip to any district in Bangladesh, everyone asks: "What famous thing did you bring back?" Almost every district has a food or product it's known for: sweets in one, doi in another, fish, fruit or handwoven cloth elsewhere. This post gives the complete list of famous foods and products of all 64 districts, by division. First the stories of a few of the best known, then the full list.

A few famous across the country

Bogura doi

Thick, sweet yoghurt set in clay pots, the first thing that comes to mind with Bogura. Doi from the town's old shops is sent all over the country.

Cumilla rasmalai

Small rasgullas soaked in thickened milk. Matribhandar's rasmalai in Cumilla is the most famous; many people buy some as they pass Cumilla on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway.

Natore kachagolla and Tangail chomchom

Natore's kachagolla is a soft sweet made from chhana, called "golla" (ball) although it isn't round. Tangail's Porabari chomchom, reddish brown and juicy inside, is one of the country's best-known sweets.

Old Dhaka kacchi and bakarkhani

Mutton kacchi biryani in fragrant rice and crisp bakarkhani with morning tea are the two symbols of Old Dhaka's food. A full day plan is in Old Dhaka in one day.

Khulna's chuijhal

Mutton or beef cooked with the stems of the chui vine, pungent and unlike anything else; the most famous dish of the Khulna–Bagerhat–Jashore region.

Where to find the real thing

  • Look for well-known old shops: many shops trade on a famous sweet's or doi's name. Ask locals which is the genuine, long-established one.
  • Match the season: mangoes are best in June–July, lychees in May–June, date-palm jaggery and pitha in winter, hilsa in the monsoon.
  • Before carrying it home: doi and syrupy sweets spoil quickly; on long journeys take dry sweets or well-packed items.
  • Handmade products: buy jamdani, nakshi kantha, shitalpati or shatranji directly from artisans or trusted shops.
