Khagrachhari is a hill district in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, about 270 km from Dhaka and 6–8 hours away by night bus. Alutila Cave, Richhang Waterfall and the hanging bridge near town fit into a single day, and adding Sajek makes it a 2–3 day trip. Leaving out the bus fare, a day here usually costs ৳1,800–3,500 per person.

Most people know Khagrachhari only as the way to Sajek. They step off the bus at dawn and straight into a jeep, and never see the town. Yet one extra day gets you a dark tunnel through a hill, a natural rock slide and a mysterious lake on a hilltop. This guide covers the sights, how to get there, a one-day route, where to stay and eat, and the cost.

Alutila Cave

Khagrachhari's best-known sight. A tunnel about 350 ft long runs through the hill with no light inside, and in many places there is water and slippery rock underfoot. Torches are sold at the entrance, and many people use their phone light too. Wear shoes with a good grip, not sandals. The top of Alutila hill also gives a fine view over the town and the hills around it. More in the Alutila Cave guide.

Richhang Waterfall

Instead of dropping straight down, the water slides along a long slope of rock, like a natural water slide. It's about a 1.5 km walk on a hill path from the main road, uphill on the way back. The flow is strongest in the monsoon; in winter there is less water, but the rock is less slippery. Take care if you slide down it. See the Richhang Waterfall guide.

Debota Pukur

About an hour's climb from the Matiranga road brings you to a lake on the hilltop, called Matai Pukhiri in the local Tripura language: the lake of the gods. It is said never to dry up despite its height, and it is a sacred place for local people. The path is steep, so set off in the morning and carry water. Don't swim in the lake, out of respect for local beliefs. More in the Debota Pukur guide.
