Trip ticket
Sajek Valley sits about 1,800 ft up in Baghaichhari, Rangamati. At dawn the hills around it disappear under white cloud and you stand above it all. In a single day you can see morning cloud, sun and cloud chasing each other at noon and a sky full of stars at night, which is why people call it the "kingdom of clouds". This guide takes you step by step through getting there, where to stay and eat, what it costs and how to stay safe.
A little about Sajek
Sajek is one of the largest unions in the country, close to the border with Mizoram in India. The name is thought to come from the Sajek river. Lushai, Pangkhua and Tripura communities live in Ruilui and Konglak Para.
After roads and facilities were built with army support in the mid-2010s, Sajek quickly became the country's most popular hill destination. Ruilui Para now has more than a hundred resorts and cottages, painted wooden houses and a helipad. From the top of Konglak Hill you can see the hills of Mizoram.
How to get to Sajek from Dhaka
Sajek is in Rangamati district, but you can't reach it through Rangamati town; the way in is through Khagrachhari. Planning is easier if you split the journey into three legs.
Leg 1: Dhaka to Khagrachhari
Shyamoli, Hanif and S. Alam buses run from Sayedabad or Kalabagan in Dhaka to Khagrachhari in 7–8 hours. Take an overnight bus and you'll arrive at dawn in time for the morning escort, which saves a whole day.
| Bus | Approximate fare (one way) |
|---|---|
| Non-AC | ৳800–950 |
| AC | ৳1,300–1,800 |
Leg 2: Khagrachhari to Dighinala
Khagrachhari town has stands for chander garis (open jeeps) and CNGs. If you're a group, hire a whole chander gari; if you're alone or a pair, look for another group at the stand to share with.
Leg 3: Dighinala to Sajek (army escort)
From Dighinala, vehicles travel to Sajek in convoy with an army escort. Escorts leave at set times, usually in the morning and around midday. The times change now and then, so ask your driver or the local administration for the latest schedule when you reach Khagrachhari. It is about 70 km from Khagrachhari to Sajek, roughly 3 hours.
Where to stay
Hundreds of cottages and resorts line the main road through Ruilui Para. Basic cottages start at ৳2,000; resorts with a good view go up to ৳6,000–8,000. Well-known names include Runmoy Resort and the army-run Sajek Resort.
Check three things when you choose a cottage:
- The view: a balcony facing east lets you watch the clouds and sunrise from your room.
- Power and water: many cottages run solar power or a generator only at certain hours; ask when there will be electricity.
- Location: staying within walking distance of the helipad or the road to Konglak makes the early start easier.
Rooms fill fast on Thursdays, Fridays and holidays, so book at least a week or two ahead. Midweek stays are often cheaper too.

A full two-day plan
Day 1: Arrival and sunset
- Reach Khagrachhari at dawn, have breakfast and sort out a chander gari

- Reach Ruilui Para around midday, check in and have lunch
- Watch the sunset from the helipad in the afternoon
- A campfire and bamboo chicken at night, then the starry sky
Day 2: Sunrise at Konglak, then home

- Look around the Lushai village at Konglak Para
- After breakfast, head back to Khagrachhari with the return escort

A two-day budget

| Food (2 days) | ৳1,600–2,400 |

| Total | ৳5,000–9,000 |
What to eat
Sajek's best-known dish is bamboo chicken: spiced chicken packed into a bamboo tube and roasted over a fire. Hill restaurants also serve local vegetables, bamboo shoots and traditional hill cooking. Khagrachhari town's hill-food restaurants are popular too. Most places ask you to order dinner in advance.
What to pack
- A power bank (electricity is limited) and a torch
- Light warm clothes, even in summer; the hills are cold at dawn
- A raincoat or umbrella; it can rain any time in the monsoon
- Comfortable shoes; the path up Konglak is steep
- A copy of your national ID or birth certificate for checkpoints
- Motion-sickness tablets for the winding hill roads
More to see nearby
- Konglak Hill: 2 km from Ruilui, the highest part of Sajek
- Hajachhara waterfall: on the way, a short walk from the road
- Alutila cave: near Khagrachhari town; cross a pitch-dark tunnel by torchlight
- Risang waterfall: about 4 km from Alutila
- Dighinala Bana Vihara: a Buddhist monastery worth a stop on the way
Tips that matter
- Electricity and mobile signal are limited in Sajek; tell your family your plans before you go
- Check escort times in Khagrachhari; if you're late you wait for the next one
- Don't ride on the roof of a chander gari; it's dangerous on hill roads
- Ask before photographing people or their homes
- Leave rubbish in the cottage bins and keep the hills and waterfalls clean
