History and details

Patenga Beach is near where the Karnaphuli River and the Bay of Bengal meet. The big ships waiting at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port can be seen directly from here; when their lights come on in the evening the sea looks like a city of lights.

This coast was badly damaged by the devastating 1991 cyclone. Concrete blocks and stones were later laid along the beach to stop erosion, and they are now its familiar look. In recent years a paved walkway, seating and lighting have been added around the beach.

Near the beach, the country's first tunnel (built as the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel) runs under the Karnaphuli River from Patenga towards Anwara; it opened in 2023. With afternoon crowds, horse rides, speedboats and seafood stalls, Patenga is Chattogram's lively leisure spot.

How to get to Patenga Sea Beach

About 14 km from the city; by CNG or bus.

Chattogram is about 250 km from Dhaka; the journey takes 5–6 hours.

• 🚌 By bus: Green Line, Hanif, Shyamoli, Ena and others from Sayedabad/Arambagh; non-AC ৳650–800, AC ৳1,100–1,800.
• 🚆 By train: Sonar Bangla, Subarna, Mohanagar, Turna Nishitha from Kamalapur; fare about ৳400–1,200.
• ✈️ By air: Biman, US-Bangla, Novoair; one way ৳4,000–7,000, 45 minutes.
