History and details
Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born on 25 January 1824 into the zamindar family of Sagardari. While studying at Hindu College in Kolkata he fell in love with English literature, converted to Christianity and added 'Michael' to his name. He wrote first in English but later returned to his mother tongue and revolutionised Bengali literature.
He introduced blank verse and the sonnet to Bengali; 'Meghnad Badh Kabya' is his masterpiece. While living at Versailles in France, he remembered the Kopotakkho, the river of his childhood, and wrote the famous sonnet 'Kopotakkho Nod'. He died in poverty in Kolkata in 1873.
His family home at Sagardari is now a Department of Archaeology museum, with his bust, the family temple, the 'Biday Ghat' on the Kopotakkho and an Indian almond tree. A week-long Madhu Mela is held around his birthday every year.
