How the country is organised

Bangladesh is administered in tiers: divisions at the top, then districts, then upazilas, then unions. Each division is named after its main city, which is also its headquarters.

The country has had 64 districts since 1984, when the old subdivisions were raised to districts. The largest district by area is Rangamati; the smallest is Narayanganj.

Easy ways to remember the districts

  1. Learn them by division: don't read all 64 names at once; break them into small groups by division.
  2. Look at the map: seeing which district sits next to which makes the names stick.
  3. Attach something famous: Bogura means doi, Natore means kachagolla; give each district a hook.
  4. Learn by playing: practise with the Unseen Bangladesh quiz and the Farthest District game.
