History and background
Srikrishna Acharya Chowdhury founded the Muktagachha zamindari in the 18th century. Legend says a tenant called Muktaram Karmakar gave the zamindar a brass 'gachha' (lamp stand), hence the name Muktagachha. The palace, Rajrajeshwari temple and natmandir of the Atani zamindar house partly survive.
