Trip ticket
Tanguar Haor lies at the foot of the Meghalaya hills, across Tahirpur and Dharmapasha in Sunamganj. In the monsoon this wetland of about 100 sq km grows even bigger and fills with water to the horizon, the hijol and koroch forest standing in the flood. In winter, as the water drops, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds arrive. A night on a wooden houseboat in the middle of the haor has become one of the most popular trips in the country. This guide covers everything from getting there to coming home.
A little about the haor
Tanguar Haor is made up of about 46 villages and more than a hundred large and small beels (lakes). Locals describe it as "nine score kanda, six score beel".
The government declared it an ecologically critical area in 1999, and in 2000 it became the country's second Ramsar site (a wetland of international importance) after the Sundarbans. Fishing leases once damaged its natural resources; community-based management came in later.
When to go: monsoon or winter
| Season | Months | What you'll see |
|---|---|---|
| Monsoon | July–October | Sea-like water, the flooded hijol-koroch forest, swimming in the hijol forest |
| Winter | December–February | More than 200 species of migratory birds, Niladri Lake at its clearest |
| Spring | February–March | Red blossoms in the Shimul Garden |
On a first visit, choose the monsoon; that's when the haor is truly itself. Winter is best for birds, though some parts run shallow.
How to get there
Dhaka to Sunamganj
Mamun, Shyamoli and Ena buses run from Sayedabad or Mohakhali in Dhaka to Sunamganj: non-AC fares are ৳700–800 and the trip takes 6–7 hours. If you go via Sylhet, the bus from Sylhet to Sunamganj takes about 2 hours.
Sunamganj to Tahirpur
Take a CNG or motorbike from Sunamganj town to Tahirpur. In the monsoon many houseboats leave from the ghat in Sunamganj town itself, so check where you'll board when you book.
Tahirpur to the haor
From Tahirpur, boats and houseboats head onto the haor. The usual route runs past the watchtower and the hijol forest to Tekerghat.
Houseboat or ordinary boat?
| Option | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Houseboat | ৳4,000–10,000 per person (1 night, meals included) | Comfort, a night on the haor, families |
| Ordinary engine boat | ৳3,000–6,000 a day (whole boat) | Budget, groups, day trips |
Houseboats usually have cabins, toilets, a roof deck and cooked meals. A few well-known names are Joler Gaan, Dulki and Lal Bajra, and there are many more. On monsoon holidays they're booked out well ahead.
Before you book, ask:
- Are there life jackets for everyone?
- What do the meals include, and is drinking water provided?
- Which spots are on the route, and which ghat do you board from?
- Is there solar power or somewhere to charge phones?
A two-day plan
Day 1: The haor and Tekerghat
- Board the houseboat at Tahirpur or the Sunamganj ghat in the morning
- Midday at the watchtower and hijol forest; swim in a life jacket
- On to Tekerghat in the afternoon for Niladri Lake and nearby Lakmachhara
- Night on the houseboat in the middle of the haor, with fresh haor fish and duck curry

Day 2: Barikka Tila, the Jadukata and the Shimul Garden
- Watch the sunrise over the haor from the roof deck
- Morning at Barikka Tila: the blue Jadukata, white sandbanks and the Meghalaya hills in one frame
- Wade in the Jadukata river and visit the Shimul Garden (about 3 km)
- Back to Sunamganj in the afternoon and an overnight bus to Dhaka
The places nearby
Niladri Lake
Limestone was quarried at Tekerghat from British times, later as raw material for the Chhatak cement factory. When the quarry closed, water filled the huge pit and formed this blue lake. The Meghalaya hills rise on one side and green hillocks on the other; some call it "the Kashmir of Bengal". The water is bluest from October to March.
Barikka Tila and the Jadukata river
Barikka Tila is a green hillock on the bank of the Jadukata near the Meghalaya border. A few Garo and Hajong families live on it. Below runs the Jadukata, with clear blue water and white sand.

The Shimul Garden
Around 2002 a local businessman, Joynal Abedin, began planting silk-cotton trees on the sandy land beside the Jadukata. Today it's a huge garden. In Falgun the trees drop their leaves and only red flowers remain, with a carpet of red on the ground; photographers and travellers come from all over the country.
The budget (two days, per person)
| Item | Approximate cost |
|---|---|
| Dhaka–Sunamganj bus (return) | ৳1,400–1,600 |
| Sunamganj–Tahirpur transport | ৳300–600 |
| Houseboat (1 night, meals included) | ৳4,000–10,000 |
| Day-two travel and food | ৳500–1,000 |
| Total | ৳6,200–13,200 |
Touring by ordinary boat in the day and staying in basic lodgings at Tekerghat or Tahirpur costs much less.
What to pack
- A power bank and a waterproof phone pouch
- A change of clothes and a gamchha (towel) for after swimming
- A raincoat in the monsoon, warm clothes in winter (the haor gets cold at night)
- Mosquito repellent
- Cash; cards and mobile banking don't always work on the haor
Travel responsibly
The haor is a protected wetland, and the people who live here depend on it.
- Don't throw plastic or rubbish in the water; bag it and bring it back
- Don't play loud music or use speakers; it disturbs birds and villagers
- Don't take boats close to birds or chase them
- Don't damage fishermen's nets or fish enclosures
