Trip ticket
Say "Sylhet" and you picture tea bushes on the hillocks, glass-clear water tumbling down from the Meghalaya hills and Ratargul's trees standing in monsoon water. Few districts in the country pack in so many kinds of nature. But Sylhet's best places are spread in different directions from the city and depend heavily on the season. This guide covers when and how to go to each place, what it costs and how to fit it into three days.
When to go: the season is everything
The biggest mistake on a Sylhet trip is visiting the river spots in the wrong season.
| Place | Best time | In the dry season |
|---|---|---|
| Ratargul swamp forest | July–October | No water, no boats |
| Bisnakandi | June–October | Less water, more exposed stones |
| Sada Pathor | June–November | Less water, but still worth it |
| Jaflong | All year, best in the monsoon | Clear but low water |
| Lalakhal | October–March, for the blue-green water | Water at its most colourful |
| Tea gardens and the city | All year | Pleasant in winter |
How to get from Dhaka to Sylhet

Getting around Sylhet
For places outside the city, a reserved CNG or a leguna (for groups of 8–10) is easiest. Transport to Jaflong, Bholaganj and Gowainghat leaves from Ambarkhana Point.
| Route | Reserved CNG (return, approximate) |
|---|---|
| City to Jaflong (via Lalakhal) | ৳2,000–3,000 |
| City to Bholaganj (Sada Pathor) | ৳1,500–2,500 |
| City to Ratargul | ৳1,200–2,000 |
| City to Hadarpar (Bisnakandi) | ৳1,500–2,500 |
What to see in Sylhet
Jaflong
About 60 km from the city on the border with Meghalaya, India. Beneath the green hills and the Dawki bridge on the other side, the clear water of the Piyain river spills over a bed of stones. Across the river, the Khasi punji has betel gardens and Khasi villages. At the border zero point, follow BGB instructions and don't try to cross.

Ratargul swamp forest
The country's only freshwater swamp forest. In the monsoon the trunks of hijol, koroch and barun trees stand in water, and you weave between them in small dinghies. It's about 26 km from the city, in Gowainghat. A boat from the ghat usually costs ৳800–1,500 and seats 4–5. A watch tower inside gives a view over the whole forest.

Bisnakandi
Streams pour down from the Meghalaya hills over a riverbed of stones, with cold water flowing across them. Go from Sylhet to Hadarpar Bazar in Gowainghat, then 30–40 minutes by boat. It's most beautiful in the monsoon, when there's plenty of water.
Sada Pathor, Bholaganj
White stones and clear hill water at the mouth of the Dhalai river in Companiganj. About 35 km from the city, then 15–20 minutes by boat from the Bholaganj ghat, where fares are fixed. The current is strong in places; stay out of the deep parts.
Lalakhal
The blue-green water of the Sari river in Jaintapur, with tea gardens and hills on both banks. Boats leave from Sarighat on the Sylhet–Tamabil road. The colour is deepest in winter and spring. It's on the way to Jaflong, so you can see both in one day.
Tea gardens: Malnichhara and Lakkatura
Just 5 km from the city on the airport road is Malnichhara, set up in 1854 as the first commercial tea garden in the subcontinent, with Lakkatura beside it. Late afternoon is the best time to see the rows of tea on the folding hillocks. Go in with the estate's permission and don't pick the tea.
In the city
- Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal: at Dargah Gate, one of the country's most important spiritual sites, known for the gajar fish in its pond and its Jalali pigeons.
- Shrine of Hazrat Shah Paran: on a hillock on the east side of the city.
- Keane Bridge and Ali Amjad's Clock: the 1930s iron bridge over the Surma and the red clock tower beside it. The riverbank is lively in the evening.
Panthumai waterfall
A huge waterfall coming down from the Meghalaya hills, seen from the river and the village of Panthumai in Gowainghat on the Bangladesh side. You can reach it by boat from Bisnakandi; it's best in the monsoon.

- River stones are slippery; wear sandals with grip
- Don't take stones; stone extraction has already changed how some places look
- Follow BGB instructions in border areas and carry your national ID
- Ask before photographing people in tea gardens and Khasi villages
- Don't throw plastic in the rivers
