Trip ticket
As the train pulls into Sreemangal station, everything outside the window is green: tea bushes rolling over the hillocks like waves, rows of shade trees and a line of forest beyond. Sreemangal is called the tea capital of Bangladesh. In two days you can walk through tea gardens, hear gibbons calling in Lawachara, drink seven layers of tea from one glass and, in winter, watch birds at Baikka Beel. With an easy train ride from Dhaka, it's a great weekend escape.
Where Sreemangal is and why go
Sreemangal is an upazila of Moulvibazar district in Sylhet division. It's ringed by dozens of tea estates, hence "the land of tea", and it's home to the Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI).
Its big advantage is that everything is close. Tea gardens, rainforest, a lake and a haor all lie within 10–20 km of town, easy to reach by reserved CNG or rented bicycle.
How to get from Dhaka to Sreemangal
The train is best. The Sylhet-bound Parabat, Joyontika and overnight Upaban Express from Kamalapur all stop at Sreemangal, and the scenery is lovely.
| Mode | Approximate fare and time |
|---|---|
| Train (from Kamalapur) | ৳300–900, 4.5–5.5 hours |
| Bus (from Sayedabad: Hanif, Shyamoli, Ena) | Non-AC ৳500–650, 4–5 hours |
Train tickets are sold online and sell out fast; see how to buy them in our guide to buying train tickets online. Train times and off days are on the train schedule page.
What to see in Sreemangal
Tea gardens
Tea gardens surround the town. Walk the roads between the hillocks in the morning or afternoon and you'll see workers plucking leaves, rows of shade trees and estate bungalows. The BTRI area and the tea museum show tea's history and old processing machines. Ask permission before entering an estate, and don't pick the tea.

Lawachara National Park
An evergreen rainforest about 8 km from town, home to endangered hoolock gibbons, capped langurs, many birds and snakes. A railway runs through the forest; it's said a scene from the old Hollywood film "Around the World in 80 Days" was shot here. There are half-hour, one-hour and three-hour walking trails. There's an entry fee, and a guide improves your chances of seeing wildlife.

Seven-layer tea
At Sreemangal's famous Nilkantha Tea Cabin you can get a glass of tea arranged in several separate coloured layers, known as "seven-colour tea". Each layer tastes different. Many say a visit to Sreemangal isn't complete without it.
Madhabpur Lake
A winding lake among tea-covered hillocks in Kamalganj, about 20 km from Sreemangal. Walking along the shore and looking out over the tea gardens from the hilltops are the main attractions. Blue lotuses bloom on the lake in season.

Baikka Beel
Part of Hail Haor and a fish and bird sanctuary. In winter thousands of migratory birds arrive, and a watch tower looks over the whole wetland. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for the most birds. It's about 15 km from town.
Hum Hum waterfall (adventure)
A waterfall deep in Rajkandi Reserve Forest. From Kalabon Para in Kamalganj you trek 3–4 hours through the forest with a guide, along streams and through mud. The falls are best in the monsoon, but the path is slippery and there are leeches. Go only if you're fit and have a full day.
Madhabkunda waterfall
In Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar, one of the country's best-known waterfalls, dropping about 200 ft. It's a fair way from Sreemangal, so allow a separate half day.

- November–February: pleasant weather and migratory birds at Baikka Beel; less tea plucking.
- March–May: the new plucking season starts as it gets hotter.
Things to remember
- Walk quietly in Lawachara; loud talking scares the animals away
- Don't stand on the railway line for photos; it's a working railway
- Ask before photographing tea workers or people in Manipuri and Khasi villages
- In the monsoon, carry salt or leech repellent for the forest
