Panchagarh is the northernmost district of Bangladesh. On clear days from its Tetulia upazila, Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, appears on the horizon: a white, snow-covered peak more than a hundred kilometres away. Once the monsoon has washed the dust and moisture from the air, the view is sharpest on October and November mornings. That makes the weeks before winter the time to go.

When you can see Kanchenjunga

  • Month: Mid-October to the end of November is best. Thick fog sets in in December and January, and on many days you see nothing.
  • Time: From sunrise until 8 or 9 am. In the first light the peak turns pink, then white. It sometimes shows again in the afternoon.
  • Weather: If it rained or was cloudy the night before, you usually won't see it the next day. Allow two or three mornings in a row and your chance of at least one clear view is much higher.

Where to watch from

  • Tetulia Dak Bungalow: On high ground above the Mahananda River, the best-known viewpoint, with India across the river.
  • The road to Banglabandha Zero Point: A clear view north over open fields and tea gardens.
  • The tea gardens of Bhojanpur and Shalbahan: Nothing in the way, good for photos.

A 3-day plan

  • Day 1: Reach Panchagarh in the morning and take a bus to Tetulia. Check in at midday; in the afternoon visit the Dak Bungalow and the Mahananda bank, watch the stone collectors in the river and the sunset.
  • Day 2: Wait for Kanchenjunga at the Dak Bungalow from 5:30 am. After breakfast, hire an easy-bike or auto to Banglabandha Zero Point (17 km) and the flat tea gardens on the way.
  • Day 3: One more dawn try for Kanchenjunga, then towards Panchagarh town for the fort city of Bhitargarh and the Maharaja's Dighi, and if there's time the Rocks Museum and Mirzapur Shahi Mosque in Atwari. Take the night Ekota to Dhaka.

What to see

Banglabandha Zero Point

The country's northernmost point and a land port serving Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan. Everyone takes a photo in front of the zero-point marker.

Tea on flat land

Tea grown on flat ground rather than hills is Panchagarh's speciality. Tea gardens line the Tetulia–Panchagarh road for miles, and after Sylhet this region now produces more tea than anywhere else in the country.

The fort city of Bhitargarh

About 15 km from Panchagarh town lie the ruins of an ancient fort city and the huge Maharaja's Dighi. Excavations have found the remains of buildings many centuries old. For more historic sites, read Paharpur and Mahasthangarh.

Questions and answers

Can you see Kanchenjunga from Tetulia all year?

No. It's hidden by cloud in the monsoon and by fog in winter. Mid-October to November is best, and even then not every day.

What time of day is best?

From sunrise until 8 or 9 am. As the sun climbs and dust rises, the peak fades.

Can I visit Panchagarh in a day?

You can go on a night train and return on the next night's Ekota, but that gives you only one morning to see Kanchenjunga. Stay at least two nights.

Where else can I go in the north in winter?
