History and details
Where Jhalokati, Nesarabad (Swarupkathi) in Pirojpur and Banaripara in Barishal meet, about 20,000 acres grow guava — the country's largest guava area. On this web of canals a floating market has run from boats for over a hundred years.
The country's largest floating guava market is held where three branches of the Bhimruli canal meet. Farmers bring guavas picked from their orchards in small boats, and wholesalers buy them on bigger boats to send all over the country. Similar markets are held nearby at Atghar-Kuriana and Madra.
Besides the market, many visitors now come to see the guava and amra orchards along the canals and village life; many call it the 'Venice of Bengal'.
Things to do
- Watch the buying and selling from a boat in the early morning
- Eat fresh guavas straight from the tree in an orchard (with permission)
